What is Dichoric glass?
Dichroic is pronounced di-chro-ic.
The bit we call dichroic is a coating
on the glass made up from metal oxides and quartz crystals, the
coating is applied in a vacuum to a circle of glass. The dichroic
coating has many layers but is very thin, the dichroic coating has a reflection colour and a transmission colour making the glass colours shift in colour, similar to a mother of pearl and opals.
The resulting glass can then be cut and fused with other glasses in multiple firings.
Due to
variations in the firing and
cutting process individual results can never be truly be reproduced,
each piece of fused dichroic glass is unique, one of a kind piece
How is your jewellery made?
Each
item of glass is hand cut to the shape required, the glass is then
layered with other glass and finally capped with clear glass.
This
glass sandwich is then fused in the kiln taking care to probably
anneal the glass for strength and durability.
The resulting cabochon is then mounted in various ways, using a two part epoxy resin, to create stunning items of jewellery.
